This month 52 Child and Family Grants have been approved. Please see below a selection of the families we helped:
Jamie is 4 years old and has a diagnosis of Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. This has resulted in Jamie having involuntary, purposeless movements. This involuntary movement has interfered with Jamie’s ability to speak and has lead to swallowing problems. He is unable to roll or mobilise on the floor, he has not yet achieved sitting balance and is unable to stand or walk. The application is for a pacer walker. The walker is a very specialised supportive walker and it will enable Jamie to mobilise independently for the first time.

Jenna is 3 years old and has a diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis. Jenna’s condition causes her frequent chest infections and as a consequence a progressive deterioration in her lung function. Jenna does have a chronic cough and she can become breathless on exertion. The application made is for a trampoline and enclosure. Using the trampoline is one way to obtain movement of the secretions and improve lung function.

Aaron is 13 months old and has undiagnosed global developmental delay, congenital central hypotonia, thoracic scoliosis and a poor swallowing reflex. Aaron is unable to sit unsupported but he is attempting to commando crawl when placed on the floor. The application is for a standard buggy. The family require a light weight buggy to attend Aaron’s regular hospital appointments and his clinic assessments. The family urgently need the buggy as they have no means of transporting Aaron other than carrying him.

Ellie is 7 years old and has a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. Ellie presents with severe spastic quadriplegia and she is registered blind. Ellie is dependant for all of her care needs, activities of daily living and mobility needs. The application is for a specialist car seat. Ellie requires a specialist car seat with support systems tailored to her individual needs. The car seat will provide Ellie with the improved positioning, support and comfort that she requires to be able to travel safely in the car.

Gareth is 12 years old and has a diagnosis of Severe Learning Difficulties. Gareth is incontinent of both urine and faeces. It is thought that Gareth’s continence problems are as a result of him being unable to understand information being given to him. The application is for a waterproof mattress and bedding. The mattress and bedding will enable the continence team to structure a different approach to Gareth’s problems especially at night.

Hannah is 7 years old and has a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, Microcephaly, Severe Learning Difficulties and Seizures. Hannah has no speech and communicates by using gestures. Hannah is registered blind and had partial deafness. The application is for a specialist car seat . The car seat will provide Hannah with the full postural support and positioning that she needs to enable her to travel safely and securely in the car.
