Each year six doctors undertake an extra years study to gain further knowledge of the genetics and treatment of inborn conditions. The course is advertised nationally and attracts some of the brightest medical students in Britain.
Each student undertakes, as part of their study, a research project. These projects have led to important and exciting discoveries, such as mapping of genes. For exapmle the gene for a skeletal malformation called Robinow Syndrome and a congenital skin disorder called Mal de Maleda were both mapped by students during their BDF Newlife BSc course.
Just as importantly, these students eventually qualify as doctors with a deeper understanding of the effects inborn conditions have on patients and their families.
Postgraduate Fellowships
We also fund PhD Fellowships. To date we have funded PhD students at Cambridge, UCL, St Georges Hospital Medical School and Imperial College London. We are extremely proud to be supporting tomorrows scientific leaders.
